Crashlytics Co-Founder Wayne Chang wrote an interesting article about app building. The company had built a crash reporting solution for developers that was acquired by Twitter, and then by Google. Change attributes to their dedication to making their user's first 30 seconds with the app the best user experience possible as the reason for the app's incredible popularity.
According to Chang, apps lose over three-quarters of the people who downloaded their app in the first three days. He attributes this to poor first impressions. Chang talks about app developers who worry more about features and how to market their app than they do worrying about a new user’s first experience with the app. Features and marketing are important, however, they don’t matter if a user deletes the app the first day because it frustrates them.
Chang talks about developer tools with long, instructional pages or links to YouTube videos with a monotone instructor. He believes these first impressions cause users to groan and wonder if the app is worth it.
With Crashlytics' success, Chang developed Answers, a mobile analytics product. He and his team used the same process for onboarding new users and Answers became the fastest-growing mobile analytics app, beating Google Analytics.
Chang talks about a multiplayer game that found something novel for players to do while they waited for other players to join. App developers forget that people don't like waiting. One minute seems like a long time when you have nothing to do but look at a waiting screen.
Every app developer should read Chang's article. His advice about a first-time user experience is important. The methods for creating a good user experience with a friendly user interface are easy to implement. Whether you are a fan of Crashlytics and Answers or not, the advice is sound.
