The Google Proprietary Product Sans Font Has Not Been Stolen

A person bought a product called Innova Home Pest, and the font on the packaging looked like the proprietary Google font called Product Sans. The person who noticed this wondered if it was a copycat font or if Google was starting to allow the use of its font and sell it or license it to other businesses.

The first person to reply noted that the a, t and s were all noticeably different in the Google Product Sans font compared to the font on the consumer packaging of the product the person purchased. This person explained that Google Sans and Product Sans are proprietary fonts, but because there are so many geometric fonts, chances are high that many of them will strongly resemble each other.

Another person replied that it would not be a difficult thing for a person to take a proprietary font, redraw it and make their own files. This has taken place over the years with a lot of fonts. San Francisco and Roboto are two examples, with some resembling the original more than others.

There are some tricky legal situations when it comes to the use of fonts and logos. One experienced designer noted that if a font is transformed into a logo, the transformative process generally allows it to be used by other designers without legal recourse. However, the designer has to have legal access to the font in order to do this. Google does not usually let anyone outside of its company have free access to its proprietary fonts.

A few people liked the font on the consumer packaging, and they went to look at some of the many free online resources in order to identify the font and determine if it is in violation of copyright laws. Most of them agreed that it was not Google's proprietary font. These people also noted that Google has a selection of open source fonts that are free for any web designer to use. Those fonts can be found with ease on Google's site. Using one of those fonts will not get a person in any trouble. For more information click here https://imgur.com/McMkbqQ.
