Some background basics for website design, including tips and tricks.

When you're designing your website, you'll find a number of background choices. Choose carefully as your background sets the tone of your website, hopefully without distracting visitors. Your choices include:
Leaving your background white A single color like tan or black A photo A pattern, such as a repeatable SVG patterns
Plain white is elegant and makes visitors focus on your content. If you leave your background white, you can choose a color for one block so the block stands out. The majority of websites have white backgrounds. HTML and CSS styling defaults to white and many designers simply use the default. Dark text on a white background is easy to read for all visitors assuming the font is large enough

If you choose a colored background, stick with tan, gray or another neutral color. Black and dark gray backgrounds work well if you want your images with transparent backgrounds to pop out.

If you need an image for your website, you can find royalty-free images online in free image libraries. Use a JPEG or PNG image. Keep the background image static; visitors will find moving backgrounds distracting.

Repeatable SVG patterns as a background offers you more flexibility than using CSS tiling. You're able to create complex patterns instead of rectangular repetitions you are limited to with CSS tiling. With SVG backgrounds, you can put one pattern in another one.

You can find free SVG generators online where you can create royalty-free, repeatable background images you can save as an SVG, JPEG or PNG. Your SVG will always look crisp and clear. If you use raster images, they may not look good on high DPI devices. You can also find free ready-made SVG background patterns online. Many are customizable, letting you change the color or set the opacity.
