Of the many web design trends in use these days, getting creative with cursors has been largely abandoned, and this was probably because of the controversy surrounding old programs such as Comet Cursor. In the late 1990s, Comet Cursor was used as part of advertising gimmicks launched by companies such as AT&T as well as Procter & Gamble, but it quickly became an annoyance because of the insidious practice of bundling persistent spyware with the software.
Cursor effects no longer have to change the appearance of the cursor itself by means of Java coding without permissions from users; this was a large part of the reason people fell out of love with Comet Cursor in the late 1990s. With WebGL and OpenGL Shading Language modern cursor effects can be coded within a page without actually changing operating system settings. The key is to focus on the cursor trails for the purpose of impressing website visitors with cool animations.
The WebGL fluid effect is perfect for modern cursor animations, and a good place to start is Fluid Simulation, which you can preview by installing it as a mobile app on your iOS or Android device. Fluid Simulation is a creation of Pavel Dobryakov, a video game developer whose JavaScript work on GitHub is legendary. You can play around with Fluid Simulation right on your browser; since it enjoys MIT licensing, you can also contribute to the project or implement it by means of JavaScript in your own web design projects.
In essence, Fluid Simulation is a digital representation of the Navier–Stokes equations that describe fluid motion in mathematical terms. In essence, these equations are used to work out physics problems related to fluid substances such as liquids and gases. Parallel flow, convection and radial flow are some of the problems that can be solved with Navier–Stokes equations, and they form the basis of the Fluid Simulation WebGL code.
WebGL programming is mostly mastered by video game developers, particularly those who create browser-based applications, but this is a library that can be used by web designers whose projects can be augmented with special effects and creativity.
