Plover: Software that Automatically Detects Other Network Users
The ingenuity of software developers never ceases to amaze in terms of usefulness and creativity. In this case, a talented programmer just unleashed a tool for easy Airdrop file sharing, and it's 100 percent browser based. To try it out, just go to Plover.io.
Plover automatically detects other users on the same network that are currently on the Plover.io website. Those users are represented by a unique animal, complete with a cute icon.
After some testing with a desktop computer, an Android mobile device and an Apple iPhone, all connected to the same network, I was able to easily test the site's functionality. The PC was a koala, the Android was a snake and the iPhone was a monkey. After clicking on the picture of the money from the PC, a dialog box appeared asking me what file was to be sent. A Star Wars meme image seemed appropriate for testing, and it was chosen and quickly uploaded, appearing on the iPhone's browser window a short moment later. It was smooth and functional.
For what it's worth, more animals appeared after disconnecting and reconnecting the Android device. Some adorable profile art of a tiger and a rhinoceros were delightful additions to the menagerie appearing on the screen.
The instructions on how to use Plover are listed on the right side of the page, and they are quite simple and easy to understand.
Furthermore, all users can participate in a room-wide chat by clicking on the blue and white dialog button on the bottom right of the screen. Its functionality and aesthetic are similar to the widely popular Facebook Messenger, and not unlike the messaging app on an iPhone.
There were a few bugs, which is expected for a day-one launch functionality. Firstly, the Android phone kept changing into different animals when in a locked state, as if it was continuously reconnecting to the room.
