Marketing Tactics Rarely Have Scientific Backgrounds

Companies put a lot of effort into their marketing and designs. Some of them even say that what they do is embedded in science. However, a few industry experts in marketing and website design fields feel like the science that is referenced in site design is basically baloney. A design expert referenced an article from 2014 about Android designs. In this article, the authors attempt to reference DNA, physics and many other areas of scientific expertise.

A person wrote back with a .pdf reference for Pepsi's expensive logo redesign from a few years ago. They noted that Pepsi's description of the redesign process had a lot of foolish talk in it that did not make much sense. The description discussed some 5,000 years of design research. This would take people back to the ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilizations. The respondents were pretty sure that Pepsi was not around in 3000 BC.

One person added to this discourse that some people will try to add science where there clearly is no fact or research in order to seem like their ideas are on par with scientific ideas. They might do this in order to look smart. They may do this in order to play themselves up as a great researcher. In many cases, people who look closely can see through the insolence with little difficulty.

Another person replied with comments that when a company pays big bucks for a design or logo, it has to justify the process somehow. Some companies have gone so far as to write 100 page books on the reasons why they did their resign, how it was done, the meaning behind it and its importance. This is a sort of aggrandizing behavior, and it is not uncommon in the corporate world. Steve Jobs was one of the best-known aggrandizing specialists.

Finally, another person figured that design is more about the human experience. It is more of a philosophical thing than a scientific one. Philosophical discussions can seem technical and are often boring to the outsider. Take time to see through with a grain of salt.
