Originally founded by Sean Akins and Jason DeMarco and produced by Williams Street, Toonami is an entertainment block of T.V. that primarily consists of American animation and Japanese anime. The name is a combination of the words "cartoon" and "tsunami." Some say that it is meant to be a "tidal wave" of animated shows for that reason. Toonami aired as an after school - early evening block on Cartoon Network in the late 1990s and early to mid 2000s. Its founding form become popular for showcasing action anime that grew to be extremely successful with American audiences.
