Was April Fools Day A Hit Or Miss From StackOverflow?

StackOverflow made a few changes to their site over the weekend. They put up GeoCities, which has not been seen since the mid-1990s. They also changed the color, layout, font and animations on their site. The site did put up a button allowing users to see the site's regular design instead of the retro 1990s one.

A few people commented that it needs more .jpegs. Another person noted that the site's redesign could benefit from an even more obnoxious side bar. One additional person commented that they thought the redesign was disgusting, but they loved it anyway.

A vast majority of people who took a look at this realized that it was in honor of April 1st. Even though this happened while it was still March 31 in the United States, it is important to recognize that other countries had already switched their calendars to April 1st. All around the world, people celebrate April Fool's Day. In the tech and programming communities, celebrations of this international prank day typically focus around faux new products, joking site designs and similar ideas to make other people in the industry laugh.

It is widely known that on April Fool's Day, sites like StackOverflow will do something to put a smile on the user's face. Google has also been known to do this. Some news sites even promote these temporary redesigns. It is all in good fun, and no harm is meant by it.

There will always be somebody who does not think that the April Fool's Day joke is funny. So long as nobody is hurt in the process, a silly site design or rehash of what the site looked like some 20 to 25 years ago is not really a problem. While the idea might annoy the most stoic of programmers and web developers, it never hurts to have a bit of humor in your life. This type of prank or joke does not hurt anybody. The worst it can do is cause some distraction during the work day. Taking a few minutes out of your day is a good stress reliever.
