Today's Designers Can Choose from Countless Fonts for Site Text

Countless fonts are available for download on the Internet beyond what are often installed as extensions of various programs' text-creation tools such as WordPad and Adobe PhotoShop. The shape of a set of letters can be modified in a seemingly endless number of ways in terms of the core design, its thickness, its level of italicization, and its color. Nevertheless, fonts can only dictate the outward shape of symbols used for letters without imprinting designs into the solid stretches of color that make up those symbols. Making a letter such as "M" appear as though it is composed of block-like objects resting against each other, for example, is a matter of using a graphic design program to either create the stylized letter from scratch or modify a letter "M" that already exists.

Programs like PhotoShop and Adobe Illustrator support typing letters of text as Unicode strings and then running them through a process called rasterization to convert them into an image format that is compatible with those programs' image-editing tools. Once a rasterization process has been applied to a string of text, however, it will not be possible to click on the result as if it was still a text string and add or delete additional symbols worth of text. While a text string remains as such in either of these programs, it exists as a vector-based element, which means that the text can be adjusted to any size and have any font applied to it without it losing its sense of sharpness. Once a text string is converted into a static image, it will look blurrier and pixelated if it is subsequently changed in size or distorted.

While a rasterized set of letters can be made to look textured using the image program's potentially advanced editing tools, a common method of creating stylized letters that appear to have three-dimensional depth is to have a program like Illustrator create individual elements that appear on separated layers. Each layer can have gradients applied to it to give the resulting shape the illusion that its separate sections are casting shadows.
