This Interesting Website Builder Project Has Web Designers in Mind
Most web designers tend to frown upon the use of online website builders such as the ones offered by GoDaddy and Wix. They do not even like more advanced builders such as Webflow, and the reason is because these tools are geared towards end users who are happy with the themes and templates given, and who are also more interested in completing personal projects that they can publish on the spot.
As useful as website builders may be, they have certain shortcomings, and one of them is related to responsive design, which often ends up becoming compromised by drag-and-drop user interfaces. While page elements can be visually dragged and dropped into place, website builders do not guarantee that the drop will be positioned correctly unless the top and left pixel widths are properly declared. The other problem is that website hierarchy, which is essential for accessibility and screen readers, can also become jumbled with drag-and-drop functions.
There is an ongoing project consisting of a web app that can actually present a website builder canvas for web designers; it modifies the standard builder interface so that it resembles the art boards used in solutions such as Adobe XD. Modification of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS code can be done on the fly, and instant publishing similar to WordPress is supported as well. This is crucial when it comes to development aspects such as accessible code and true page responsiveness.
Some web designers feel that their jobs could be in jeopardy if website builders keep making progress to the point that they combine prototyping functions such as the ones found in Adobe XD, Sketch, and Figma. There is more than just the art board approach being developed in a couple of projects, and the right development team could create workflows that would mimic some of the jobs that designers are routinely hired for.
It is too early to tell if planned projects will ever go as far as placing the jobs of web designers in jeopardy, but some professionals are rightfully concerned, and this may explain why many of them have decided to enroll in coding and app development courses.
