ScrollyVideo.js Is A Wild Ride Through the World of Responsive Scrollable Videos">
You've seen things like this before on the giant publications. Text appears in coordination with video content, and it matches the imagery as it flies across your screen. It might now be time to leave your jealousy at the door because ScrollyVideo.js has arrived and it's looking to shake up how we display content for web users. This innovative new library provides a way to create responsive scrollable videos without obscure video encoding requirements. Compatible with React, Svelte, Vue, and plain HTML, this tool should be perfect for visual journalism, marketing materials, or other scrollytelling applications, but its implementation has been met with mixed reviews.

Brief testing from our side showed a viable product from which to work, though it isn't necessarily somethign that you can easily figure out as a novice.

The individual responsible for this product is Daniel Kao. Kao is a veteran data and news story visualization expert. With a degree in Cartography and Geographic Information Systems from the University of Wisconsin and experience as a senior graphics engineer for Commonwealth Magazine and frontend engineer for the New York Times, Kao is well-versed in the art of storytelling and crafting compelling visuals. He is passionate about using digital mediums to help readers understand complex challenges facing societies today and envisions newsrooms as the perfect environment for experimentation, development, and creativity. When Kao isn't working, he loves eating noodles, surfing, reading, and traveling.

Keeping in mind that our friends on Reddit tend to criticize just about everything that appears on the "Front Page of the Internet," not everyone is a fan of the new library. Reddit user @Billybobjobo pointed out some QA feedback: "Demo page is glitchy experience on iOS iPhone 12 Pro. Video doesn’t always progress with scroll—sometimes seems frozen—occasionally glitches back and forth between video frames at rest." He also noted that compressed videos tend to look bad when paused, which is a valid concern.

Another Reddit user, @Guitarromantic had this to say: "FYI, uBlock origin removes all the videos (it thinks they're ads?) which made for a confusing experience when I loaded the page." And @Escapefromelba noted, "Crashed my mobile browser. Android system UI super laggy until I closed the window. New Pixel 6a too. Congrats?!"

Despite the criticisms, there are still those who recognize the potential of ScrollyVideo.js. @Robsstuff praised the code, saying, "Really cool, checked out the code on GitHub too and it’s so nicely written and readable."

It's clear that while ScrollyVideo.js isn't perfect yet, it's a step in the right direction; allowing content creators to do more with less. Daniel Kao has created a tool that could revolutionize the way we create content, whether it be visual journalism, marketing materials, or other scrollytelling applications, and it's only a matter of time before it gets cleaned up a bit more, and we start seeing it on blogs all over the place! Who knows, we might even find a use for it here on 10 Best Design!

DreamsTime is an online royalty-free microstock provider based in Brentwood, Tennessee. It was started in 2000 as a website selling royalty-free images and was redesigned as a “community enabled” microstock provider in 2004, entering the market after its rivals iStock and Shutterstock. According to Nashville Business Journal, the company had sales approaching $10 million on the year 2007 with revenue growing expected to grow to $15 million in 2008. DreamsTime's imagery is targeted for individuals, private sector and Fortune 500 companies.

DreamsTime is headquartered in Brentwood, Tennessee, USA, and is currently the world's largest stock community with 46 million users. The company accepts anyone as a contributor and relies on them to grow their file database. Images are licensed as royalty free, meaning one license has unlimited uses, and the prices of the licenses images vary from $0.20 to thousands of dollars, of which the contributor receives a percentage.

For those DreamsTime paid users who are negatively impacted by this outage, another Reddit user @libcrypto suggests, "Yeah, looks down to me. When it comes back up, add up the down time and send them an email asking for a (down time)/(month time) refund for the month."

As of 1/31/2023, DreamsTime had 18,000,000 registered members, more than 300,000 contributing photographers and over 64,000,000 photos, illustrations, cliparts and vectors and unique visitors exceeding 11,000,000 monthly. The cause of the outage is still unknown, and DreamsTime users will have to wait to see if their losses can be recovered. It remains to be seen how long the outage will last, leaving DreamsTime users in the dark until the website is back up, and hopefully the cause of the outage can be identified and fixed so that this doesn't happen again. Nobody likes when the lights go out and the party ends, except for maybe Hunter S. Thompson, who would revel in the chaos and confusion of a DreamsTime outage.

First, like a person did recently on an online forum, it can sometimes be a very good idea to ask for constructive criticism. After all, when you work on a website for so long, it is difficult to view it objectively. Asking for feedback allows you to see your project through the lens of someone who is landing on it for the first time.

You'll want to ensure that all of the relevant sections possess headings. Work on integrating each item on your page so that it looks seamless. Another issue to keep in mind is the contrast. It's up to your aesthetic sensibilities to ensure that nothing important fades into the background. In this day and age, our eyes are continually bombarded by all kinds of marketing messages, so it is crucial to make websites as easy on the eyes as possible. You can do this by using section dividers that give the eye a bit of a break, and you can also do this by making use of clean typography that allows visitors to read your website without any impediments. One user suggested employing a grid system to organize items, making the user experience as delightful as possible.

If you want to be ambitious, go for a full stack project. You can even build a new API for it. In the website that the person recently posted about in an online forum, many of the other users were very curious about their backend. And, in fact, the user stated that they are working on the backend a great deal. Eventually they would like for all of the functionality to exist within the site. That way, users are able to easily edit information themselves.

Need help with a new book cover? Take some beneficial advice!

In the modern age, people still judge books by their covers on platforms such as Goodreads.

10 Best Design

Finding the right book design is crucial. The layout and format of all kinds of books - everything from a novel to a collection of poetry - has a significant impact on the reader's experience. If you want people to pick up your book - or in the digital age, click on it - you'll need a professional design.

Goodreads is the way that many people discover their next immersive reading experience. Using these types of platforms provides independent authors with a means of promoting their work, getting it out there for people to see. With the help of platforms like Goodreads, more new authors are getting their books read thanks to the added exposure and distribution.

The design that's pictured is of good quality - you can tell that the designer put in the care and effort to present the text in an aesthetically pleasing way.

It is a minimalistic design choice - but isn't necessarily a negative. Book designs don't have to be too fancy. The main point of a design is to serve the text, not distract from it.

You should always watch out for errors with margins, padding, and gutters. These are all things that the casual reader might not pay attention to, but the more critical factions of your audience - which every genre has - will certainly notice these mistakes.

While a simple mistake with margins might not seem like a big deal, it communicates to experienced readers - literary connoisseurs - a lack of professionality and even sloppiness, which will only work against you as you try to win over your reader.

It's also important to consider the different types of devices that people will be reading the book on. Each device obviously comes with a different screen size - it's not just the resolution you need to be thinking about. Without a big enough screen, some touch targets may be too small.

In general, it's helpful to listen to advice and look for constructive criticism in the feedback. It's truly impossible to make it in the design world if you have thin skin. Try not to take any critiques personally - it's best to assume that anyone offering their advice only wants to see you improve your skills! It offers both functional and aesthetic advantages.

10 Best Design

You might have heard that Safari -WebKit-appearance is awesome, but you're not sure why? Here are 10 reasons TIL in Safari -WebKit-appearance is the best.

10 Reasons TIL in Safari -WebKit-appearance Is Awesome

1) You can get rid of all your other browsers because it has all the features they do and more.

– You don't need to use any other browsers again
– This feature does everything for you. If you want the look or text styling then this browser will be perfect for you (and if you don't then, well too bad)
– This browser is just the best there is. Get rid of all your other browsers because it has everything they do and more

2) It's fast so browsing takes less time than usual. This means you can browse more often which keeps you up to date on what's happening in the world.

– Your computer performs faster than ever before so web pages open instantly
– Websites and apps are also quicker so there is no waiting around while your device tries desperately to catch up with loading them.

3) The CSS Grid gives users a new way to design their websites that isn't possible with other browsers.

-You can do something called the CSS Grid that will allow for even more creative websites to be designed. Other browsers don't have this feature (and those who say they do probably haven't tried Safari)
– It is unlike anything else offered by any other browser, so if you want to design your website or app with a layout that isn't possible elsewhere then TIL should use Apple's WebKit and not Chrome or Firefox.

4) It's easier to navigate websites since you can hover over everything.

– It's easier than ever before to navigate websites with the ability to easily see what is clickable and what isn't (with other browsers there are always surprises)
– You can simply move your cursor across a website instead of clicking on everything which makes finding information more efficient.

5) You can make your website stand out with custom designs that are specific to you.

-WebKit-appearance lets users have more control over their websites because they aren't limited by the common design tools now.
– You can easily change the colors and fonts of your website so it looks exactly how you want.

6) It makes websites look good no matter what device they're viewed on.

-WebKit-appearance gives users a new way of interacting with their website that isn't possible with other browsers.

7) It changes the way you interact with websites so they're more efficient.

-WebKit-appearance gives users a new design tool they never had before and makes it so easy for people who want something different from all the other similar sites online today to do just that -- create something different.

8) You can change the way websites look with just a few lines of code.

-WebKit-appearance makes it possible for anyone to change the way websites look with just a few lines of code.

9) It makes browsing on your tablet or phone easy.

– It's easier than ever before to use your phone or tablet because you can easily see what is clickable and what isn't (with other browsers there are always surprises)
– You can navigate through each website more easily so finding information won't take as long anymore since scrolling up and down will be better supported.

10) It makes websites more secure.

-WebKit-appearance makes browsing safe for users by protecting them from malware and other security issues that plague the internet today.

Designing Dialogs to Meet the General Data Protection Rule

The General Data Protection Rule from Europe started a plethora of dialogues concerning user privacy. These dialogues can serve many other function on sites.

10 Best Design

Following the implementation of the General Data Protection Rule across the European Union a few years ago, we started to see more dialogs come up on websites that we visit for the first time. These web elements warn us about the kind of cookies and other tracking technologies that may be activated if we agree to continue browsing the site; in some cases, there is an option to manage the cookies.

We see other examples of dialogs in action when we are about to download and install applications on mobile devices. These interactive elements let us know about actions that will be take place if we proceed with installation. Depending on how these dialogs are coded, there may be multiple choices and interactions. Even more recently, dialogs have been used to nag visitors into staying or clicking other sections of the website so that more traffic can be captured.

The recommended design of dialogs call for a container, description, title, backdrop, and action buttons. A/B testing results show that these five parts of design structure are needed for effectiveness in 2021. There should always be a choice to dismiss the dialog, and it is up to you as a designer to create that function; you can listen for the Escape key, place a close button, or terminate the element when the user clicks on the background. If you choose the latter on CSS, you will need to code a div.backdrop solution along with some JavaScript.

Some designers use an overlay or modal pop-up as a differentiator for a special message or offer. When users are viewing an offer that they like, you can offer them a special discount, add a free gift, or change the content to something more inviting and desirable. Another function that can be created by coding a special modal window is to nag the user about some action. Users will often dismiss an undesirable nag immediately.

Other types of dialogs include a chat or Q&A style, an alert box, an informative message with a background or link that shows more details, a form for subscription, and a welcome greeting. Some of these elements are more difficult to code than others and have special requirements. For more information click here https://tympanus.net/codrops/2021/10/06/how-to-implement-and-style-the-dialog-element/.

However, there are many steps that anyone can take to come to terms with it.

10 Best Design

It's okay not to like design. It's okay if you arent aware of what you're doing in Photoshop or Illustrator. It doesn't make you a bad person; it makes you human. Designers are humans too, and sometimes they need help with their work too. With these tips for designers, maybe the next time someone asks, "How do I stop hating design?" You'll be able to explain to them exactly how to stop feeling that way.

1) Embrace your mistakes- There is no such thing as an ugly mistake. Every mistake can teach us something new about ourselves or our process when we take the time to analyze them properly. The more we are willing to embrace our mistakes, the less likely they will happen again.

2) Give yourself a break- You are not perfect. You did your best, and you can do better, but that doesn't mean you have to keep beating yourself up over it. You often need to take a break and do something else.

3) Find a mentor- Sometimes, we just need some guidance, and that's where mentors can come in handy. They're able to help us grow and solve problems without having the pressure of doing it themselves.

4) Don't be afraid to ask for help- Asking questions is okay. People will not judge you if you don't know something. Everyone needs a little bit of guidance from time to time.

5) Take a class- Sometimes, the only way to figure out how something works is by taking a class, especially if you're trying to learn design for the first time.

6) Keep a design journal- Design journals are great to keep track of your thoughts and ideas. Sometimes a notebook is all we need to find the answers we're looking for too.

7) Look outside of design- Design is not the only thing in life. Take a break from it all and look at things with a fresh perspective.

8) Practice makes perfect- Practice is the key to success. If there's something you want to be good at, all it takes is practice.

9) Give yourself room for growth- We are all works in progress. No one is ever completely done growing or learning something new about themselves.

10) Make sure you are passionate about what you do- If you don't love your work, it will show in the final product. Make sure that every project is something you care about and not just a job!

11) Enjoy yourself- Sometimes projects take longer than expected, but if we enjoy ourselves during the process, then even when our deadlines are tight, we'll be able to make it happen.

12) Don't compare yourself to others- Everyone has a different process and workflow, which means you can learn a lot from other designers even if they don't work the same way as you do. You're not competing with everyone else, just looking for ways that people have succeeded For more information click here https://www.reddit.com/r/webdesign/comments/qkqkt0/howdoistophatingdesign/.

While the cause isn’t known, there are two possible answers.

10 Best Design

A Mysterious Online Issue Strikes Without Warning
Online, people have been discussing an interesting issue that can come up at times. One website owner noted that they decided not to retain any backups of their website online — at all. Then, one evening, the website inexplicably changed back to what it had been two years prior. This person compared the glitch to seeing Thewaybackmachine, an archive of webpages. Since this website owner was the only person in the world with access to the site's administration, they fleetingly thought that perhaps they had been hacked. However, such a hacker wouldn't have even gained anything from the exercise.

A Multitude of Explanations for the Odd Event
One of the best suggestions was that perhaps the hosting company was responsible for the anomaly in some way. In the event that they lost a drive, perhaps they reverted to old backups. Although the website owner mentioned that the hosting company would keep backups for just a month, it is practically impossible to know. And even if one contacts the hosting company to find out what exactly happened, getting a straight answer about an event that took place over a short period of time can sometimes be difficult.

The DNS May Be Pointing to an Old DNS Server
One of the simplest solutions is that the DNS could be directed toward an older DNS server, which would also explain the error. Many of the users also asked how the website was made — and whether or not there were backup functions on the platform that was used to create it. When troubleshooting such oddities, after all, sometimes one finds the answers lodged in the site's architecture. Other times, the issue is of a more external nature. Either way, it doesn't hurt to get to the bottom of what occurred. If so, then this article is perfect for YOU! Fontfacer is a handy tool for generating font rules.

10 Best Design

You can never go wrong using the right kind of typography for web design projects. Some web designers believe that fonts can make about half of their user interfaces stylish and meaningful, and they are probably right in this regard. For a lot of design professionals, applying font to their projects means using Google Fonts, which is a massive repository of typefaces for the web that keeps getting larger, but this requires making yet another external server call.

Web development professionals have noticed that modern websites suffer from too many server calls and external dependencies to anything from JavaScript and CSS libraries to simple fonts. Not only can this have a detrimental effect on page loading speeds; there is also the matter of subjecting visitors to third parties that will drop their own cookie and behavioral tracking elements in order to gather data. While you can trust the security of font repositories such as Google, there is the matter of making fonts available to visitors in offline mode.

Fontfacer is a web app that enables you to generate the necessary CSS rules for you to host any font on the server where your web design project resides. As long as the font files of your project have traditional naming convention, you can upload it to Fontfacer and get the CSS rules you need. Once you complete the upload, the web app will display what you; simply copy and paste the output into your code.

Fontfacer is especially useful for the development of iOS projects, because the iOS Simulator runs in offline mode. With Fontfacer, you can easily host the relevant fonts in an application or static file, and you will not need to make an additional request to a third-party API when you need to test font fallback in iOS.

There are some other options for building typeface-specific style sheets on your server, but Fontfacer is the easiest to use. After you've generated the font rules, you'll need to go back into your source code and add an internal server call to the font rules. Keeping server calls down to a minimum should be a new web development standard. While freelancer websites are effective, three other approaches may bring in a good flow on new business.

10 Best Design

Lots of people wonder how freelancers find clients, especially when they are not using freelance websites such as Fiverr and Upwork. The truth is there are a number of ways they go about landing clients. A few of these ways include:

Offer Website Creation Services To Small Businesses
One method freelancers do is reach out to small businesses that currently don't have a website. This requires a bit of outreach, but the way it works is contacting small businesses via cold calls or cold emailing to ask them if they would like a website created for them. Many small businesses already have a website, but there are still plenty that don't have one.

Hand Out Physical Business Cards & Send Virtual Business Cards To Businesses
Freelancers of all kinds can hand out their physical business cards to anyone who runs a business. They can do this by attending business conferences or going door-to-door to companies.

If handing out physical business cards isn't appealing, then freelancers can create virtual business cards. Once the cards are created, they can send them out to as many businesses as possible. With so many social media sites, it's easier than ever to find businesses to send virtual cards to.

Spend Money On Ads
A top way for freelancers to get clients is by placing ads on a number of classifies websites and/or on social media sites. Best of all, it doesn't cost much to advertise services, and ads can be scaled. A good tip is to test out 3-4 different ads, and then see which one is performing the best. Freelancers will want to spend more money on the best performing ad, while scrapping the other ads.

Freelancers who don't use sites like Fiverr or Upwork tend to use the above methods to find clients. The reason is because each of those have huge potential.

Web Designers Have Choices with Front End Design

Web designers need to be careful about whether they're wireframing or creating a mock-up for clients to peruse.

10 Best Design

If you have been doing web design and front-end development for a while, there is a good change you have heard a colleague say "anything that is worth doing well is worth overdoing." This is a mantra of web designers who are perfectionists, and they are the kind of professionals who will render gorgeous animations on Figma mock-ups.

Wireframing a website and producing a mock-up are not the same. The latter can be quite elaborate, and it gives you a chance to show off your design skills, but do you really need to go all the way and throw in complex animations made with Adobe After Effects? You can't really do this with Sketch because that is mostly for static models, but Figma will let you do it. The real question is whether this would be overkill, and there is a reasonable answer in this regard.

Some clients know about front-end design, at least the basics, but many of them don't. If you show the latter a static mock-up and ask them to envision sliders, transitions, and animations, they may not be able to. This is when inserting After Effects or Lottie files within Figma would be useful. One word of caution though: Never animate what you can't see yourself or a partner actually coding.

If you have never coded an animation before, then you are going to struggle with complex Figma mock-ups. There are tutorials for you to read and online courses that you can sign up for and then get your hands dirty. In fact, the best place to learn is by experimenting on a live website and making changes on the fly. When it comes to the web, there is no room for excuses; you are going to have to code your own animations, so either do it the right way or do it the hard way. There are plenty of places on the web where you can get assistance with building web animations on After Effects. As long as you keep in mind that the client will probably want you to code the animations, it will not really be overkill. This method of structuring and laying out information has been widely used across various professional industries, favored because it provides a flexible template that works well for numerous applications.

Additionally, websites and browsers also often benefit from these types of timelines, making them potentially useful for all things internet-based - meaning virtually everything in the modern age.

However, bootstrap timelines are seen less and less in the business world across all industries, and in some cases, it's clear why. It's crucial for both those who write bootstrap timelines and those who request them to understand what they're trying to accomplish from the timeline. These individuals also need an understanding of what information is needed in order to complete a timeline that is accurate and comprehensive.

Distracting from the Real Problem
Some see these forms of timelines as merely a deterrent that executives and other higher-ups use to get employees to try to work out complex business issues without supplying them with adequate content to fill out the rubric. When that's the case, employees often find that nothing ever comes from the timeline request.

The primary missing piece of the equation is content. It's impossible for those at the lower levels of the business hierarchy - generally speaking, the ones writing these timelines - to provide their own content with which to build the timeline.

Used correctly, a bootstrap timeline serves to showcase or introduce ideas in a chronological structure. They're generally four to five pages long, with the information ordered in a standardized hierarchy. This makes it easy for anyone to find key details about this comprehensive future plan.

Whether you're planning an event, mapping out your experiences, building a portfolio, keeping journals, or creating climate histories, there are a plethora of applications for bootstrap portfolios. However, it's been shown time and time again in the professional world how a lack of content leaves those who are tasked with writing these timelines with little to nothing to go off of. Pixel Hop, a British digital design agency based in Brighton, recently shared a cool example of AI that uses the pose detection library maintained by Google at TensorFlow.JS. The project included a bit of Halloween whimsy, and it basically used facial feature detection in order to turn visitors with cameras into skeletons.

According to the developer, the project involved the WebGL back-end libraries of TensorFlow, an API for video recording, another API for audio and, and yet another for sharing reactions on social media apps. The project runs surprisingly smooth considering all the server calls and Vue libraries queried, but it is pretty neat nonetheless.

As you can imagine, pose detection is not an easy ML task. Think about all the possible variations in the poses that humans strike at any moment. Google developers at the TensorFlow project have been using computer vision to overcome these difficulties; you can see through the aforementioned Halloween skeleton project that they are getting better, but we still quite a few years of R&D left on this specific ML task.

Many AI researchers have long believed that a major advance in pose estimation can come from a combination of sophisticated deep-learning technology and large training data, but it hasn’t really happened. In the most famous example, last year Google released a paper that claimed its DeepFace model — essentially an artificially intelligent image classifier — was able to recognize a new face within a single second, using a dataset of 10 million face images. But when DeepFace is pointed at just a random patch of the image, the performance is still nowhere near that good — DeepFace’s accuracy is between 85 and 90 percent on the average image.

Microsoft is trying to prove that pose estimation can be as accurate as object recognition. The tech giant is using its advanced neural network developed for object recognition as an effort to shift it over to pose and facial recognition. In the near future, we may be able to see more pose detection routines incorporated into digital user interfaces.
