New Font Is Promising Breakthrough For Visual Difficulties Caused By Dyslexia

As a medical term, dyslexia encompasses impairments related to various aspects of written and spoken letters and words. A person who otherwise possesses standard intelligence can be diagnosed with any combination of dyslexic symptoms such as an inability to visually parse letters quickly, difficulty with spelling words, and an inability to write words coherently. For certain degrees of dyslexia, certain fonts and typefaces may be far less legible than others on account of subtle changes to how letters are shaped and spaced apart.

A graphic designer created a font called "Dyslexie" that is designed to make text much more readily legible in the face of the particular form and extent of dyslexia that he has lived with. It aims to compensate for common difficulties that standardized fonts tend to pose toward impaired persons; for example, it prioritizes space between each individual letter to help dyslexic readers avoid perceiving tightly packed letters as "conjoined" with each other. The font does what it can to stylize every letter distinctly from the rest; deft implementation of curves and minimal use of serifs help make infamously similar-looking letters appear more dissimilar at a glance and prevent readers from unwittingly mirroring or rotating a given letter. The font even goes out of its way to make capital letters bold so that readers can recognize when a sentence is ending and another sentence is beginning past that.

It should be noted that it is not possible for a single font to be created that can serve all kinds of dyslexic readers because each afflicted individual's condition amounts to that person's unique take on the broadly defined impairment as a whole. Different fonts can be vastly easier for different people to read regardless of whether they can both be categorized as "dyslexic," so people with the condition should install a browser-based plugin that lets them quickly change the font of any text displayed on their browsers' windows. It should be noted that many other customized fonts have been released that aim to make reading easier for readers with various kinds of dyslexia.
