Does Website Size Really Matter Anymore?

Over the past few years, the use of the internet has continue to grow exponentially as more and more companies go online and internet technology continues to advance. Along with this, more and more websites are becoming far more sophisticated. In fact, today the average website takes up twice as much space as it would have just three years ago. There are several reasons why this has taken place.

Images and Videos

One of the main reasons why websites are taking up more space is because there are more images and videos online than ever before. Five years ago, videos posted online were much more rare. Today, since download speeds are so much faster, more websites utilize videos on their pages.

Advanced Scripts

Websites are also taking up a lot more space because they now run on scripts that are far more advanced than they were in the past. Websites today need to be able to provide a lot more information and handle more tasks than they did a few years ago. Along with this, more advanced scripts are needed to operate the websites. This creates a more spacious web page that needs to be managed.

It is hard to argue whether or not websites are getting larger and take up more space, What remains to be seen is whether it really matters. Today, there are two train of thoughts on the matter. Some people believe that larger websites do matter. One of the main reasons why they matter is that larger websites today take longer to load and can reduce overall customer experience.

Furthermore, there is only a limited amount of Internet size out there. While the theoretical limits are far away from being reached, it still could be a long-term concern if the trends continue.

However, there are many people who believe that it really does not matter. While we may be on track to reach the theoretical limit at some point, the estimates do not account for improvements in future technology. It is assumed by many that these improvements could help to make website more efficient and slim down.
