basicScroll Can Enhance the Dynamics of Visuals on Your Website!

basicScroll is a flexible method of employing CSS custom properties to allow visual elements on a web page to visually change while scrolling down the page's contents. JavaScript code is used to uniquely control these custom properties in order to allow complex dynamic effects to occur while a user scrolls up or down a web page. It was designed by a web developer named Tobias Reich, who is based in Frankfurt, Germany; he has posted his work on his website, basicscroll.electerious.com, where basicScroll's functionality becomes visually apparent once the user scrolls down the page. A link directs users to the package's GitHub profile where it may be downloaded and installed for personal use.

Because basicScroll only uses lines of code in CSS and JavaScript files to express how elements are to be displayed as moving or changing, a website that uses it does not decrease in performance for the user, whereas a Flash feature may exhibit stuttering and slowing. The animations that basicScroll can express may nonetheless be entirely smooth, and its code can deliver this visual functionality on either wide desktop screens or narrow mobile devices without necessarily needing to be implemented in separate, modified forms that accommodate different screen dimensions. It does not even make use of any dependencies.

Three separate demo links to CodePen.io are provided on basicScroll's web page on Electerious.com, each displaying how connected JavaScript and CSS files are used on an HTML page to cause dynamic visual elements to occur without processor-intensive operations. For example, the first shows how pieces of text can be easily encased in their own boxes that will react to any scrolling of the page, while the second stacks five separate traditional image files in front of each other to create a scene resembling a natural environment that exists in three-dimensional space. The image depicting a distant mountain range will scroll slower than the forest image in front of it. However, basicScroll will only be able to output results such as these on web browsers that support displaying CSS Custom Properties and can call the "requestAnimationFrame" operation.
